He said, "My wife and I have been meaning to get our licenses to carry."

I said, "OK - What is it that's stopping you?  Or, are you just looking for someone to talk you into it?"

Rather than try to talk you into carrying a gun, let me just give you the parting words that I share with my LTC students:

Upon receipt of your Certificate of Training, you will have met the minimum standard set by the State Texas for a License to Carry a Handgun.

Soon after submitting your application to the Texas DPS, you should receive your License to Carry a Handgun, the world’s least lethal firearm.

If you find yourself in a life-or-death situation with no option left, other than the use of a handgun, your ability to combine the ineffectiveness of the weapon, with grossly inadequate training, and a total disregard for the need to practice, will probably be enough to ensure that I won’t be seeing you again, for additional training.

You Just Want Everyone to Have a Gun!

Dr. Michael S Brown

When a person who believes in strict gun control argues with a supporter of gun rights, you can tell when one of them realizes they can’t win the argument.

The gun owner will usually fall back on the Second Amendment and the phrase “shall not be infringed” as being the final word on the subject. Supporters of more gun control laws will often resort to some variation of: “You just want everyone to have a gun!”     READ MORE

Texas' New Open-Carry Law Unpopular Among Some Gun Owners

John Burnett

Last year, there were emotional protests for and against a law that would allow Texans to walk around with pistols on their belts.  It passed, and on Jan. 1, Texas became the 45th state in the union to allow the open carry of handguns.

But, in an unforeseen backlash, the new law may actually hurt the cause of handgun carriers.     READ MORE

Thief Who Stole More Than 85 Guns Receives Probation In Plea Deal

Bob Owens

Don’t talk to me about passing a single new gun law if you aren’t fighting to make sure criminals are being prosecuted to the fullest extent of our existing laws. Criminals who commit crimes involving firearms are routinely allowed to cut plea deals on every level, even after people are killed with stolen or straw-purchased weapons.

A gun thief in Minnesota who is receiving probation after stealing more than 85 guns is just the latest example of our nation’s continued failure to put those committing gun crimes behind bars.     READ MORE

January Gun Sales Set Yet Another Record

Stephen Gutowski

The FBI conducted more gun-related background checks this January than in any other January since the system was created.

With 2,545,802 checks processed through the National Instant Background Check System, January 2016 beat the previous record, set in January 2013, by 50,326 checks. Though January’s number represents a drop from the all-time single month record set in December 2015, it is also marks the ninth month in a row that has set a record. It is also the third month in a row with more than two million background checks.     READ MORE

The Dynamics of Edged Weapon Attacks

Leslie Buck

To be able to defend against a knife attack, we must understand as much about edged weapon attacks as we can.  Knowing the mechanics of a how a knife is used and learning about the dynamics of an edged weapon attack will add a dimension to this understanding.   What is an Edged Weapon?   When considering the threat of edged weapons, there are more than just knives.  It is a category of weapons.  For the purpose of developing a defense against edged weapons, we can include conventional knives, blades, etc. as well as other objects that cause damage similar to a knife or blade in the same category.  These include things like homemade shanks, pens, pencils, scissors, screwdrivers, nails and anything else that can pierce flesh with a thrust.     READ MORE
